hello all i think i may be having some problems :( ive just this second checked my tank up stairs and one of the neons was floating and being eaten by my zebra danio.....ive never heard or seen this before and only the other night the neons were all fine, im now worried in case any more die?

there is a betta, the zebra and 3 neons in there now. please any help suggestions would be really helpfull :(

Hey :)

What are the details of your tank? ph, ammonia, litres/gallons, decor etc
What sort of betta do you have in there? rule of thumb is not to keep bettas with fish like neons or the neon will end up as breaky :( How longs your tank been running for? Neons i find will disappear before your eyes. I went from 20 neons one night to 1 the next day. My gourami was picking them off for dinner i think....

Ive found that its perfectly normal for a fish to munch up the sick or dead fish. Its a natural instinct i think for them to do this. Same as picking off the sick fish...natural way of life.

Was the tank cycled prior to adding the fish?

If not then neons are notoriously sensitive to fluctuations in ammonia and nitrite. It can wipe out whole shoals literally overnight.

And then as mentioned above the other fish will eat the dead/dying fish.

ammonia was under 0.25mg that was yesterday i tested it, ph is around 7.3, im unsure on nitrates as im awaiting my test kit to come (api) the tank was already cycled before they all went into it so id say the tank is pushing 3 months maybe 4....my betta is a very calm one....but i did notice the zebra is chasing the neons.....is this normal??

ANY ammonia means the tank must not be fully cycled at the mo. And I think even .25 is enough to cause problems to neons.

How big is the tank? Danios are very active fish that need quite a bit of swimming space. They may be chasing the neons as there isn't enough room.

what i ment by that is i have no ammonia :) sorry i didnt word that very well, i just tested the ammonia level again, still its under 0.25mg, my kit shows it to be yellow when safe and shows up as 0.00mg so i guess i have just a little amount of ammonia? maybe none, either way its late at night (11.46pm) anyway i went to look at the tank when i tested the ammonia and something isnt right...not only is there a whole wall of green and brown alge growing on one side but also my betta was losing colour...i noticed he is very white underneath near the front of his mouth...the neons all looked white with hardly any colour and the same with the zebra, they were in darkness untill i turned the light on, could this be caused by that?? thanks....the tank is around 8-10 gallons im unsure on the exact size, please before anyone starts digging at me i know its not a massive tank but its the only home i could give them as the main tank needed to be broken down as i started a fish-in cycle without knowing anything about fish.....

im sure you now aware that tanks nead to be over 6 months mature before you add neons, this is not me moaning.... just repeating what was told to me about a year ago when i first started

i wasnt aware no :( i guess all i can do is hope now then.....
