ok i have one of those stick on the front of your tank thermometers, and today it says my tank is at 90 degrees..well it is rather hot here today...but i stuck my finger in the water and it didnt feel any different to normal....it didnt feel very hot seeing as 90 is near boiling point...(i have an acrylic tank), could it just be picking up the temperature outside the tank....???

i have never heard of that... it is surely not 90 degrees, you wouldnt have any fish in there then :p the thermometer is probabally not working right in some way, whether it has to do with the acrylic tank, or just the thermometer.

I don't trust stick on thermometers. Spend a couple of bucks, & get one that goes in the tank. They are more accurate.

Tolak

I would invest in one of the normal thermometers as I find the stick on ones unreliable, not sure what you can do until you go to the lfs.

Maybe open a couple of windows to let air circulate around the room.

I wish it was that hot here :D

Hopefully someone else may be able to advise more.

i have had the problem but with an in tank thermometer it is saying just above 80 but the water is cool to the touch very wierd as i know the therometer is working

i know i broke my last proper one that goes inside...ill go get another one tommoro!

edit- bloozoo is reading this and i promised i would type properly lol!

mmm mine hit exactly 30 degrees Celsius (88F) today
It went off the chart for my stick on thermometer, but I have a glass one as well that measures right up to 50C (120F)
Just this very minute looking at the best type of cooling fan money can buy! I really do not have a clue what else to do. Luckily this particular tank is usually around 28, so it's not a massive increase, but still - not really what I'd like to see.....

 don't be silly, it's fine :p
It's just when a whole post is written in something that looks like short hand to me  when I find it hard to read the whole post properly (without giving up halfway through).

Well truly, mine isn't far off as you can see  and my glass thermometers (two different brands!) are spot on.

yea i know...doesnt seem good...but my fish are all acting normally....so i guess there not too bothered...but still i shall buy a second one..for a second reading...cant hurt...unless i brake it again! dammit

edit...well im guessing mine must be rite then bloozoo....but the water just doesnt seem that hot....what temperatures can fish stand then...because obviosuly mine and bloozoo's are doing ok at around 90!

Well I did a water change tonight and it brought it down to 29C for an hour or so, then it shot up again to 30 (88). So it's me (and a zillion other people no doubt) to go and buy a really good quality fan (fingers crossed!).
My other tanks are fine as they are in a different room with more ventilation.
But yeah, all my fish are active and look absolutely fine, so suppose it not all that bad.....

well i have my fan im going to get it in a minute when i come off here...and yea its just this one tank...all my other tanks which are in different rooms are fine... :dunno:

well my fish are fine so i guess theres not much i can do... :fish: and yes ive herd about ice cubes and plastic bottles...but whats the point when its just going to go up again!

Well some fish don't do that well long term in water that hot. It would also depend what sort of an increase you're talking about. What are your tanks usually at ? Mine are usually around 27 / 28C (81 / 82F) so the jump isn't massive.
I know people have suggested floating ice bags in the tank to keep it cool and another suggestion is wet towels with fans blowing on them.
I suppose just keep the room as ventilated as you can and do the best you can if you see your fish getting distressed or listless.

well mine is normally around 80-82 so as you said not that much of a drastic jump......and im going to open all the windows..even though i hate doing it in case spiders come in nooooooooooooooo....i also aim my fan at it and keep the lid open for a while.....

Stick on thermometers are not accurate, my stick on says my tank is 75 degrees, whereas with my dip in the tank thermometer my true reading is 79 degrees.

If you buy a thermometer try and get a pure mercury one, these are better than the ones that have the coloured liquid in them usually red, although these contain a percentage of mercury also, the pure mercury ones react much faster and give a more accurate reading.
