i heard that you have to turn of ur heater an pump sometimes because it generates cold water when left on to long and unhappyfish...just wondering how long would you leave it off for and when ??

how can a heater make cold water when left on?
i turn both heater and pump off when doing a water change only.

At a guess, (and one I believe in), an air pump will probably INCREASE heat loss slightly when it is running due to increased surface agitation in the cooler air, (but I'm sure your heater can cope with this, it just might be 'on' a bit more often!), but I really don't see how a heater is going to make the water cold when it is on, that would seem to be a broken heater to me :p

i am unsure how a heater left on, could make the water cold? if you mean "filter" when you say "pump", i guess a spray bar may cause heat loss, and its true the extra surface area, it causes, should aid cooling. even an air pump, would produce, warm ish water(friction). but the air would be warmed more as it goes through the pipe to the airstone, or whatever.

personally, i only ever swithch off the filter for cleaning. everything else is left on 24/7-365/52. just make sure the inlet for your filter and the heater are below the water leval, during water changes.
