Is This Safe?

So I bought some slate and decided to break it up and when I sliced it in two it showed some great colours however I'm now thinking this doesn't look safe?

Is the brown coloured part ok almost looks like rust?!

Rust or Iron III oxide is insoluble in water, I doubt this is rust anyway, more than likely some form of clay sediment.

No it looks rusty but unsure what it is.

So am I ok to put in my tank?

Just give it a rinse and see if it comes off, should be fine.

I have rinsed and soaked it nothing budging?!

In that case it should be fine, place a weak acid on the brown stuff such as vinegar and see if it effervesces, my guess is it wont, in that case it will be safe to add to a standard freshwater set up.

So iv done the vinegar test and nothing happened, I take it that's safe?
