Hello everyone,

I have been for a walk today and I found lovely slate stone at the river bank that I collected as I thought it would look nice in my tank. However, I collected it at the mouth of the river so the water is really quite salty. My question is, are slate stones safe for fish? I read somewhere that some stones cannot be used for tanks?! If they are good to use, how would I have to treat them prior to adding them into the tank? Boil them?

Thanks in advance.

As long as the stones have no metallic veins in them, they're all 'safe', the only problem you can get with them is if they have a lot of chalk or lime in them it can affect your pH and hardness. Slate is quite safe and won't affect your water at all.

Don't boil stones; first of all there's no need, and secondly, if there are any trapped air pockets in them they can explode

Just pour boiling water over them and give them a good scrub, and then let them dry completely and they'll be safe to use :good:

Cool, I'll have another good look at them and do what you recommended. Thanks for your help!
