I bought five anubia nanas to start of a lightly planted tank. I didnt really want them tied to anything to I purchased the plants alone with the view to planting them in the gravel. However, it was very difficult to get them to hold to gravel without floating. Therefore, as a temporary measure (and because I dont have any fishing line) I've used an elastic band to bind them to small pieces of slate to act as ballast until the roots take hold in to the gravel. Im then hoping to be able to snip the elastic bands and off and remove the piece of slate.

My only concern is that the elastic band might damage the rhizome by being a little tight.

Is this ok or is there a better way of getting them to establish roots into the gravel?

It's fine, just make sure that the rhizome is always above the gravel.
