do eartheaters sit on the bottom?

i got 4 but one justs seems to sit around. it swims quite normaly when prompted tho!

Do you know what sort of earth eaters? is the one on the bottom resting on its fins?

No its not normal, whilst they do mainly bottom dwell, they are usually fairly active, sifting thru the sand/gravel.

From the looks of your pictures on your new tank set up in tropical discussion, I would say you have either Satanoperca Jurupair or Satanoperca Leucostica, definately not Satanoperca Daemons btw.

they were sold tome as Satanoperca Daemons by MA, but they did sell me a GT as a blue acara!

How can i tell what thry really are? more pics?

its just staying in the same place ( the other 3 are really active)

ill try and post a video in a min

Photos would be good, clear full side shots. I cant see particularly well in the shots on your other thread.

MA usually label all the satanoperca species as either Demon Eartheaters or Geophagus Jurupari. Which isnt very helpful.

Dont know if this will help when I was trying to id mine

heres a video[/url]

i tried to post it directly but it said "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board"!

Ok from that its definately not S.Daemon, look at my signature, ok its adult, but that is a S.Daemon. However, it does look pale, isnt breathing normally and doesnt look at all well.

Any chance of full side on shots of the others for an ID.

just posted pic links above!

hmmm he doesnt look good, breathing really heavily, how long have you had them? The base of the fin looks a little red to me also. Personally I would remove him to a smaller tank and dose with a general antibacterial medication. Your substrate is fine, do you know what it was kept on before, I have read they can get damaged gills from rough or large gravel, that is another possibility.

Looks like a jurupari to me btw.

Yep Satanoperca Jurupari, which is helpful with the other fish you have, as S.Daemons require a much higher tank temperature and are a more sensitive species.

I suggest as Star4 above, seperate, medicate and if possible, check his gills to see if anything is stuck in them.

Just discovered how to get the video full screen, looks red in the mouth and around the gills, some sort of bacterial infection I would guess at.
