Hello! So, back into the hobby, I've re-setup my 35L tank. I've been using a nearby shop called A5 aquatics where all the staff are very knowledgable and are careful to give consistant advice to customers.

Now, my problem is that I've just stocked with 5 galaxy rasboras, and a single dwarf gourami. All are doing great! However, the gourami is behaving a little peculiarly, in that after getting over the stress from travelling, and gaining confidence in swimming around, he's taken to swimming along the glass. It's almost as if he's chasing his reflection.

Is this normal? I'd basically like some comfort in knowing I haven't bought a fish with mental problems (besides being a simple fish of course)and that this behaviour will dial-out as he becomes more and more acquainted with his new home.

If background of the tank is required, it's only been setup for about 48 hours. Water's been conditioned properly, and I've used stress-zyme+ to help the fish in the new tank. I also started the tank up using Safestart by Tetra, which was added just before the new occupants. I'm usually a traditionalist and have begun cycling the tank using traditional methods, or even by cloning using filter media from an established tank, but I've been assured by the professionals in the local shop that they use this stuff and it works fine. But the key issue I'm concerned about right now, is my gourami.

Thanks in advance!

Did you say you USED established media, or that you Usually do, but didn't this time?

An uncycled filter explains the gourami's behavior.

My LFS are very knowledgeable about SOME parts of fishkeeping, but they think the ONLY way to cycle a filter is to let a fish fish die through the cycling process. I think that even the best staff at fish stores won't know everything there is to know about such a broad hobby. Maybe keep in mind that even with the best intentions, they could be wrong. It sounds like you have an uncycled tank.

Have you tested the water for ammonia?
