I have 7 tanks at home, 1-55,1-36,1-20,3-10 and a 5G.
My question is why do people put chemicals in there tank? I have all my tanks with no chemicals and maybe do water changes like 2x a month if that for all tanks if needed, my water is clear as day my tank doesnt smell and my fish are happy ive been running all my tanks for over 10 months and never a problem.
Never even tested the water.

I think it is probably different experiences and also different conditions. People newer to the hobby may be more inclined to add chemicals to the tank to help them and have themselves restassured. I think it would also depend on the inhabitants, etc.

I have only been fishkeeping...wow 5 months now! I tested obsessively the first couple of months, and still do with new setups. Though I do regular weekly water changes on all my tanks as I like to keep them tip top regularly and feel better adding the fresh water (I also have picked some of the messiest fish around lol).

yeah ive tried doing the whole fish thing when i was younger and it didnt work out i always had dead fish and a weird smell coming from the tank then i gave up,
Then one day i found a 36 gallon tank took it home filled it up and the next day got some goldfish and then the adventure started.
Ive tried the whole chemical thing in my tanks but the water stood cloudy as hell so i stopped and never had a problem since.

Woh woh woh you have 9 goldfish and 1 koi? What type of goldfish? Koi are not suitable for aquariums as they have the potential to reach well over 2ft long when fully grown.

To truly know if your fish are 'happy' you need to test your water stats.

well i have 9 feeder goldfish in acouple of tanks spread out, also i may be a newbie but im not dumb i got my Koi fish at my house in NewJersey in a Pond and some Turtles. I mean it is tru i wont know if my fish are happy till i test the water but i see my fish as like dogs they wag there tail when there happy

People live with environmental conditions which are not good for us, often appearing fine but actually suffering long term damage which will seroiusly shorten our life expectancy

Asbestos
UV light exposure
smoke/smog
carbon monoxide
radioactive materials
to name a few

Exposure to these things will rarely kill us instantly (except the carbon monoxide), but no one can doubt the damage they do. Likewise fish can live through increased exposure to ammonia and nitrites, but it does present health issues. A water test is the only way to find out for sure.

Well then i see myself going to petco and getting a test kit this morning, do you guy recommend any?

I like many on this forum use the API Master test kit (a liquid based test) for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and PH. Having read a number of reviews here, the cheaper test strip kits are a waste of time and money.
