Hi,

First off, I would like thank Sylvia for her guide on adding fish to a 10 gallon tank.

I origianlly bought African Chiclids but after some research, came to the conclusion that my 10 gallon tank is way small for them.

So here is what I got instead:

3 Zebra Danios

2 Tetras

2 really small catfish

Now, my question is whether this is a good selection for my 10g tank. And can I add anything else?

Thanks

Jacob

A 10 gallon tank is very small so keep up the weekly maintanance of cleaning your filter(in aquarium water) and doing a 10% water change.
Tetras are usually more comfortable in numbers (six minimum).I would consider perhaps a larger tank if possible.

No space for a larger tank and I also just bought this one. They'll survive?

When I clean the filter in aquarium water, the discoloration of the filter doesn't go away and the filter has this red button that pops up very frequently. When I use my regular faucet, it cleans it much better. But then it kills my good bacteria?

Hi Jacob,

Firstly, don't ever clean your filter under the tap. This will almost certainly lead to disaster as it does kill the beneficial bacteria which are essential to having a healthy tank.

Secondly, Paul_219, what would possibly make you think the tank is overstocked? Your tank is not overstocked, Jacob, and i would advise you to get another few tetras for the reason Marshall laid out below. You would notice them being a lot happier.

Do you have any pics?

BTT

your tetras are black widow tetras, and your catfish is a cory, hard to tell what type in that pic.

Hmmm, well there are a few problems with the stocking (eg, too small for energetic Danios, not enough tetra's or cories etc), but I appreciate its not always easy to just get rid of fish etc :) so if you really cant re-arrange your stocking then im sure they'll get by :) clean your filter media maybe every month or so (rinse in old tank water) and ull be fine :good:

Dont worry about the discoloration of your filter.I assume the red button is to tell you when it needs cleaning.
If this is very regular it may be worth getting a small external filter this would also increase your water capacity. :good:

O.K. Thanks. :good:

I think the cory is possibly a Syn. (?), Esfa. Dunno. Here's another picture:

Gentlemen, do you think I should add some more Tetras? How many?

Also, do I need to clean the tank from Algae if I have those 2 corys? What tools would I use? What else to they need to eat?

How do I make sure that the tetras get to eat as the Danio's hog the food?

I have a Elite Hush 10 filter. Do I need another one?

This is all so exciting! A new hobby, demanding yet very interesting.

I tried to follow Sylvia's guide but the fish store did not have any of the species mentioned and I had a store credit with them that I needed to use -_-

My level of Ph is about 7 and ammonia is 0. i have to get a test kit for nitrate. My Chiclids were o.k. for the 2 weeks that I had them.

I really appreciate all the help and advise here :D

A group of 5/6 is recommended.

Yes clean the glass and decor, cories wont eat much algae, they need pellet food. You can buy mag-floats to clean the glass.

Put half up one end, when the danios are feeding put the other half up the other end.

Dont know sorry.

No problem :good:

I have 2 black widow tetras, can i get 3 of a different type or should I stick to the black widows?

The corys won't eat flakes?

One danio died, now there are 2, should i get another one or it does matter?
