I bought some ammonia to do the fishless cycle and today i was reading the ingrediants after have been using it for a while and it says

INGREDIAINTS: Ammonium Hydroxide solution, and Quality control agents.

I was wondering if it is no good because of the quality control agents. What are they? Could this screw up the cycle? The bottle says clear ammonia. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't use it. Just plain, pure ammonia is all you need. The other chemicals can be toxic to fish or other things you put in there.

So they could have been the reason ive had trouble getting my ammonia down? It seems i cant build baxcteria

Yea, im going to have to make sure the next kind i buy is completely pure and hopefully i get some bacterial growth goin.

I'm using ammonia hydroxide 50% for my fishless cycle. Real pure ammonia is actual gaseous. I got mine from a local lab that does water testing etc. They use it to clean their flask and test tubes and such. The CAS# on mine is 1336-21-6. This number is world wide and will not change. If your ammonia has this number it should be okay. The only stuff mine had been mixed with to dilute it to 50% was water.

Try a local water testing lab and see if they will sell you some. Next time round though I would only use 30% solution as I think the 50% was overkill.

Keep the Faith

When you do a water change or if your ammonia is the right kind, I'll just give ya some filter sponges if you want. I was planning on changing the filters in the next week anyway. All of my tanks are disease free. You could bring some buckets and take some water as well. just an idea.

WalMart sells pure ammonia. I believe the brand name is Seamist. It's only about 50 cents a bottle.

Thats the one i have, look at the ingresiants it has quality control agents (not sure what they are).

Gaya i have already got a filter cartrige from a friend, thanks anways though. I appreciate the offer, if i have to start over or something i mihgt have to take you up on it though. Thanks

Ive read before many times thank you. I was just saying that it passes the test of shaking it but the ingrediatns have one extra thing.

I'm currently in the process of cycling my 125 gal freshwater tank. The ammonia brand that I'm using is called "Top Crest". The ingredients aren't listed on the bottle however, it works. I'm on day 18 of my cycle and I'm getting 0ppm ammonia readings since day 16 (I'm still adding ammonia everyday). I started out at 5ppm. My nitrite is at 2ppm and my nitrate is 20ppm. Hopefully my cycle will finish this weekend, I'm tired of looking at an empty tank!!!!!!!
