I accidentally bought 4 head & taillight tetras (as explained in a different thread). I am posting this separately because I am wondering if I left one at the store. Four of the fish looked like this:

But one looked like this:

The eye has that red upper half, but there is no black spot on the abdomen and the black spot on the tail is much larger. Also, the fish in the store was a bit larger than the others and seems a bit rounder. Also, the fins look different. I assumed it was a different species from the 4 I bought but both of above pictures came from a search result for "head and taillight tetra". Was I wrong? Are these the same species or different?

Thanks

bottom fish is a red eye tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae).

fish in top picture appears to have a gold sheen over its body. Do they seem irritated and are they rubbing on objects? If yes the fish has velvet (Oodinium).

Hi! Both pictures are from the internet, not my fish. I had trouble getting clear pictures of my own fish so just used one from an image search. Mine appear normal so far. Thank you for the identification on the red eye tetra. I will let the store know they have it mislabeled.

It's not necessarily mislabelled at the shop. Sometimes fish jump into other tanks and you might get the odd different fish in with some others.

I would return the Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae because only one is going to be severely stressed, and these are rather active and feisty tetras to begin with, so not only is this bad for the individual fish but you could have issues with other fish before very long.

Get more of the Hemigrammus ocellifer (Head and Tail Light Tetra) if you can, as they will be much better in a group of 7+.

Hi Byron! I did not buy the Moenkhausia sanctaefilomnae (red eye tetra) because it looked very different to me from the others. The store guy was trying to tell me that it was the same as the others, which he was calling "brass tetras" but that was also wrong as it turns out. I'm glad I didn't listen to him. I certainly don't need any "fiesty" fish. Rather, the other fish in the tank don't need any fiesty roomates! I think I will take your advice (and Colin's from the other post) and get more of the H. ocellifer to increase their numbers. Thank you!
