Scientific names are only two words. For instance, in the case of humans, it is Homo sapiens. Homo is our genus, as in Homo erectus and Homo habilis (both early hominids, commonly accepted as ancestors of our species). And sapiens is our species name.

So a three-word name can't be right. My guess would be that it would be EITHER Trichogaster or Trichopterus as the genus, and then EITHER trichopterus or sumatranus as the species.

I'm sorry. One of my aquirium books has that as a scientific name for a golden opaline gourami, and i was just wondering wheter a golden opaline gourami was the same as a gold gourami.

Opalines, golds, gold opalines, three-spots, blues, cosby, platinum etc are all exactly the same species - trichogaster trichopterus. The only difference is in color. The 'sumatranus' is simply used to describe the fish as a sub-species though actualy it is just a color morph. It's similar to the leopard and zebra danios which are given slightly different scientific names but are exactly the same species - just a different color morph. On the other hand there are fish like badis badis badis, badis badis siamensis and badis badis burmanicus which belong to the same genus and species but belong to rather different subspecies.
