Hi all sorry if this is in the wrong place however I am trying to identify this fish we have - all I recall is it's a bottom feeder but cannot name the species - the kids affectionately call it *Sucky*

Any idea also if it's a male or female - sheer curiosity :) It's the only fish in our little tank we don't know the species of :)

Thanks for any help!

It's an Ancistrus sp, commonly called 'bristlenose'.

Thank you fluttermoth! Ancistrus thats what they told us when we got it - the name has totally evaded me since we got it home!!

Another new name for the list :)

That's fantastic thank you for that!

Any idea from my pic if Sucky is a He or a She? Not got a clue what I'm looking for with this one!

Thanks again

It's hard to tell from the small picture. But Males have a lot of Bristles whereas Females have a fewer. If it is a juvenile it may be difficult to tell. Try a quick google image search so you can distinguish the difference between males and females and then you may be able to judge :good:

The image is clickable and should open as a larget pic ifthat helps. I will have a google as well :)

It was tiny when we got it I'd say we've had it 4-6 months ish now.

Thanks again!

I would expect to be seeing some bristles on it by now if it was a boy, so it's more than likely a girl :)

Yep, I'd agree - unless it's not the 'common' ancistrus (which you'd know because it would be reasonably more expensive, and they'd have fewer for sale), then it's almost definitely a female.
