Ok, today, I just purcased this Cambodian Male Betta, very pretty, with Silver and Orange Scales, I noticed this as I bought him, he had a few black scales. Is there something wrong with him? I would post pix, but my parent's have the digital camera with them in San Dieago. Ok, thank you.

Thats normal.......Ugh Its called Melano Cell Migration. (I think thats wat its called)

Basically he was living a crappy life in that cup, once he got him he started to "heal" theres an article abou it..........They go away aftera while

I like the bettas I see in those small little cups they are cute and colorful. I might buy one to give to my oscars as a gift......JUST JOKING!

It may be melanophore migration which is the healing of the scales after ammonia burns. Takes a couple of weeks to go.

Being in cramped conditions and no water changes then the toxic part of ammonia increases so burning the skin turning it black. It can also be caused by trauma, nitrite burning and flukes. In your case i would suspect the ammonia burns.
If you saw the black scales when you bought him then he may have been moved to fresh water prior to you buying him.
You will know in a couple of weeks if the scales return to there normal colour if that was the case.
If it is parasites, keep an eye out for any odd behaviour such as shaking of the head, striking off plants or gravel and general off behaviour.

er, i think Kopix more accurately means "i can't keep them alive" (although a discussion regarding her difficulties with bettas is an off-topic discussion and not necessarily appropriate to a thread regarding melanophore migration. :sly:)

I had to read that a couple of times to get what you posted, but ya, it was a bit off topic. Oh, and is this normal, when he eats, he sorta bobs his head, to get it down. Is this normal? Cause my other bettas do that.
