hi all, i have a four foot tank about 180 litres, and i have the outlet from my external filter under the surface and so it doesnt disturb the surface.

my question is that i have a 8 inch airstone on a tetratec air pump to disturb the surface a bit and put bubbles in there but the fish seem to be at the top of the tank most of the time so im not sure if that is adequate??

I would raise the outlet more to the surface to ripple the water.

you could buy a power head and connect a small bit of flexible hose to it and then to a spray bar which you would site just under the water level, the power head could get hidden in the corner behind plants so you would not see it you wont get oxygen problems then :good:

The part that areates the water is the distrubance at the surface. The airstones really don't add that much oxygen. They go up and disipate too fast. What they do is ripple the surface a little. I didn't realize this until a Mod told me.
Yep you could leave your spary bar just below the surface and then angle it up so it churns the water a little bit. That will help. You could experiment with it at different points too and see what appears to provide the best areation with less swirling of the water underneath. (unless your fish like current)

You do not say how many fish you are keeping or what the water parameters are. Since a common reason for fish to be spending time at the surface, it may not be a question of oxygen. Please post your stocking and water parameters and maybe we can be more help. The arrangement you have now should be enough to give the oxygen for a reasonable stocking level so I am suspecting it may be something else that we have yet to hear about. The 8" air stone should give plenty of water surface movement and water circulation.
