When I went in to my local pet shop the other day was actually to get some food for my hamster I asked the guy if there was any way that you could tell the difference between a male and a female common fantail goldfish and he said that you couldn't tell the difference. On getting home i decided that I asked one of my mates who keeps goldfish herself and she said that you could tell by the shape of the tail. I'm just wondering whether this is fact or fiction and is there any obvious way to tell the difference between a male and a female?

Apparently you can tell, the male get white patchs around the head when getting ready to mate.

I'll keep a look out for that. I only thought I would ask because the two of mine have completely different tails. One of them has a proper fantail thats looks like it's material floating behind it but the other although it looks the same is alot shorter and not as big so was just wondering if this was a way of telling the difference.

yes i heard the same thing ... that you can see white dots on the gills of the male when he is ready to mate

if you can go to Koko's Goldfish forum they will help you their for sure

Thanks for the help guys :D Much appreciated :D
