tetras are closely related to piranhas
Yep, it may be hard to believe it, but they are characins I can tell my tetras are closely related to piranhas
So are Silver Dollars, Bala Sharks and a number of other large schoolers though I'm more against them being sold to newbie fish keepers who don't realize the mess they'll get into as opposed to just outright barring them.JustinSane said:I really don't think piranhas are suitable fish for aquariums.
They are really large fish, growing up to 12" and as most Characins, they are schooling fish, at least six individuals, that is. They are also rather difficult to feed and are really really messy. I'd say that a 250g. tank is the bare minimum for a small school of piranhas.
Besides their reputation is highly exaggerated, most keepers report that red piranhas are more shy whimps than ferocious predators.
I have to admit that they do look quite impressive but for public aquaria only IMO.![]()
