When I woke up this morning his ventral fin seemed even shorter and rounder. It looks a little frayed at the end, so I am treating the tank with anti-fungal/fin rot stuff. It's a veil angle, but I have noticed that there are species that don't have pointed fins, could it be a cross breed? I had a platy that was nipping at the angle, but the platy died about a week ago, so I know that's not an issue anymore. Thanks for your help.

Looks like a black marble angel and it doesnt matter whether the fins are rounded or pointed. Cant see the ventral fins in the pic so a clear side shot would be great if you can get one.
If the ventrals are looking ragged maybe theres another fish having a go. What else is in the tank and how big is the tank?

Here's another shot, he was being a bit more photogenic.
It's a 10 gallon with a pair of mollies, a platy, and 3 litle tetras. There's an Oto cat in there and a few kuhli loaches hidden somwhere.

To be honest the tank is overstocked, angel fish need no less than 30gal, and this is why there probably grumpy and could be nipping lack of space.
I would rehome the angel or get a bigger tank.

Its more to do with depth of tank than anything else. 10 ia a minimum on its own but the tank should be 18 inches deep or the fins dont grow tall.
I dont see anything wrong with your angel.

Nobody nipping, I'm in my room alot and they all happily swim around. Good to know, I was thrown off by the fin not being pointy, but I guess I should expect that with a smaller tank (it's only a foot tall). The fish will probably be moving to a bigger tank in the spring when I move to a bigger place.

Thank you!

My marble is the same, nice rounded finnage.

In a shallow tank, especially one with a substrate, the ventrals will get shorter. They drag on the bottom, often getting damaged.
