The nice guy in my lfs said that aquarium plants grow much better in more acidic water. Certainly any vallis has melted at once in my hard water, low tech tank; other plants have done slowly but ok. Anyway he sold me some ro water (with added trace) as I got some golden rams at the same time, so I shall use some on my next water change.

Most plants are pretty adaptable to hard or soft water. Some like fish have a distinct preference. Vallis is much happier in harder water, so what ever caused it to melt it wasn’t the hardness of the water. The gold rams will definitely be happier in softer water though.
