Hi all, My son has a tank with 6 guppies in it and 1 of them I think might be pregnant. Not sure though as i`m new to guppies. Hopefully I will be able to tell like most of you on here can.I will try to upload a pic and I would love to hear what people think. The pic isn`t the best quality as it is a cheap camera but you will still be able to see her.

Cheers, Min.

Just a quick question, are all the guppies females? Also they say that most likely they are pregnant just from getting them from the fish store. Question is will they abosrb the fry/drop to soon or go through with the pregnancy. I've had both done with new guppies..

I could be wrong considering im still new to breeding guppies but it does look like she could be pregnant considering her stomuach is a little low. But if she is, shes no where near ready to drop yet.

A little hard to tell. She could be but as Lyra pointed out she's far from being ready to drop. When and if that time comes she'll start to resemble a square box, called squaring off. Do a bit of research and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck! and welcome!

There are 2 Males and 4 Females in this tank. All are bought from local stores. Some where from mixed tanks and some weren`t.

I`ve been reading and I`ve also seen a post that had pics of the squared off belly. There was even a pic with hand drawn lines that show how the female looked before pregnant/ pregnant and over feed. There was a mention of a white dot near the rearend. I`m still reading, best way to learn (reading/asking question & watching closely).

Thanks for the replies.

Cheers, Min

Since you have males in there, she's probably pregnant garenteed, or will be anyway  Personally I havent seen the white dot on any of my guppies, although one didnt even look pregnant and dropped.. and I have another who looks like shes doing to pop (6&1/2 to 7 weeks pregnant!) and never did drop. Neither one of them had a white dot.. I'd go based off her shape. If its her very first drop she may drop early like mine did. But like I said.. with the males it's a garentee she'll be pregnant! So you'll have many more chances :)

Btw, a normal amount of time is 4-5 weeks of being pregnant, so that may help with keeping track after she drops for the next time.

shes pregnant 100% garinteed " how ever u spell " if u got a male there is no dought she is she no where near dropping though its hard to tell i had a guppie that wasnt fat at all and dropped anything is possible just make sure u got loads of plants and open the tank and look around for 5-10min each day with a flash light once u see one u will find another 10-50 that day beleave me im new aswell and u wil get overpowerd in time

Thanks for the heads up, I`ll keep reading and looking at my sons guppies. They are right here next to my pc desk. Nice creatures to watch.

Why not just enjoy your guppies? They are indeed fun to just sit and watch. I happen to be a very experienced livebearer breeder but simply sitting and watching the fish is its own reward. Chances are good that your female is carrying some fry so don't worry too much about that. As your female approaches her drop, her behavior will change and then is soon enough to worry about whether or not she is carrying fry. The total time involved, for a guppy, is about 4 weeks, so even if she just started carrying fry today, there is likely to be no more than 4 weeks before her next drop. My own thread on a molly carrying her fry will give you hints on the stage of your guppy. Mollies and guppies are very much alike when it comes to the stages of a fry drop. If you want more conventional advice, including trying to judge the stage of the female by her gravid spot color, there is another thread that is pinned at the top of this section where LM has given some clues about how to judge a fish that is ready to drop. I prefer the developmental approach of my own thread but I think each has something useful to offer a new livebearer breeder.

I read your thread about 10 times over and was comparing my sons molly which we just brought. I was thinking that she was going to drop anytime from the day we got her to maybe 1 week max. She was really squared off. The next morning I noticed that she was swimming up and down the wall of the tank like crazy, then she was just hiding behind some plastic plants away from all other fish. She ended up having 14 fry later that day. 1 got eaten by a guppy and I managed to get the rest out and placed into a seperate tank.
Now for my question. I think 1 of the guppies may drop in about 2 weeks. If so, will it be ok to take the guppy fry out and place them in the tank where I know have the molly fry? The molly fry will be 2 weeks old then.
Another question, what is a good floating plant to place into the tank that needs low light? I would like to put something there for the fry to be able to hide in.

Any and all comments/input welcome.

Cheers, Min.

PS: OldMan47 I think your thread was spot on. Thank you and well done.

A 2 week old molly fry is no threat at all to a guppy fry. You could even get away with having the female guppy in the tank with those mollies for the drop. Molly fry tend to be quite large and adult guppies are fairly small so things should work fine with that combination long enough for a drop, especially if you have decent cover in the tank.
