Hi all,

Below is a pic of one of my platy's. I've had 2 of these for about a month. They were near the same size when I got them and this one as grown a LOT more than the other. Not only in length, but fins, as well as the belly in particular. The belly looked bloated when I got him, but has seemingly gotten more bloated over time. I am hoping it is not pregnancy, the rate hasn't seemed fast enough for pregnancy though I am the farthest thing from an expert.

If it is just fat, should I be looking to separate him and try to control his feedings a bit more? He seems to eat no more than the other platy but is probably twice the volume of fish at this point.

I greatly appreciate any feedback

I swear I just replied to this but its dissapeared some how. My blind cave tetra really gorge whenever I feed them and there bellies look really swollen and pretty much double in size. I was worried so I didn't feed them for a couple of days and the bellies dissapeaed. It was a bit mean not feeding them but I now know its just food. Atm I'm just feeding tiny amounts severel times a day and it seems to be working. Hope this helps

hah, no I posted it in a general area and didn't get a reply for awhile so I thought I would ask in the livebearer area since it is a bit more of a specific crowd here, or so I assume. I just read your response in the other area =)

I appreciate the response!

Maybe I will try separating him out and giving him a lot less food and see what happens...though if I am out to lunch and have a pregnant platy I would want to make sure I deal with the fry appropriately.

Your fat platy is a sailfin, and will grow a bit larger than normal platies. Watch out though - it might still breed with normal platies

lol

Something about reading "Your fat platy" I find quite funny.

I think my fat platy needs a bit of diet. The only other platy is a male as well so unless they do some serious hyper speed evolving I should be okay.
I don't have the infrastructure to support breeding quite yet.

Looking forward to him growing a bit more...I am loving the fin on the fatty...gorgeous.

Thanks for the response all.
Very much obliged.

To me, your highfin platy looks like a male. A better picture from the side would definitely tell us one way or the other. Seen head on, I think I see a gonopodium but have a poor angle to know for sure. Have a read through of the gender identification article at the top of the livebearer forum. It will allow you to determine the gender for yourself.
