Hi There

I had my GSP for about 5 month now and his behaviour has always been the same. He is very active likes the bubble wall eats ok and is a happy little soul.
The last two days i have notices that as soon I turn the lights on he disapears under a bit of bogwood and he just sits there or he sits with the catfish in the cave under a bit of slate. All the other fish are ok.
I do my waterchanges every week just checked my nitrite and thats ok.
Any ideas

Thanks

Sabby,

My first question would be what other fish do you have in your tank? How many and how big is he tank? My experience has been that puffers do best without many tankmates. I have mine in a 30 gallon tank with 3 archers he's been very healthy and happy for over a year now.

agree with sabby here. Also correct me if im wrong, but GSP's eventually like a brackish condition as they begin to mature. You didnt really state what type of water it was in i dont think.

Hi There

I ve got a 240 litre tank its brakish water and his tank mates are one mono, one archer fish, three knight gobys, one columbian shark cat, two chromides. One croaking toad fish. ( I know that I will have to get rid of the gobys and the chromides one day as I will have to increase the salinity)Gonna get a 350 litre tank hopefully within the next six month.
Well I dont know if I found the problem. Last weekend my pump for the bubble wall sort of gave up, just bought a new one got plenty of oxygen in the tank now and the puffer has come back to live. He is loving the bubble wall. Also I was told in my lfs that puffers suffer fom internal bacterial infections and they will hide when the light comes on as they are not well and think they will fall pray to predatory fish.
just glad he is a lot happier still gonna do a bacterial treatment to be on the safe side.

Thanks for showing interest all advise is welcome.

Thanks

Yep the aeration in your tank wil definately help, my tank didn't have any bubbles in it untill yesterday. for an entire year all I had was a waterfall type filter, good oxygen levels in the tank are crucial though so the bubbles are great. Also, I realized that my puffer sometimes seems bored or shy as well, maybe it's just a phase they go through periodically. Kind of like a life history pattern or something. One thing that i do know is that puffers are very succeptible to bacterial infections, or any illnesses for that matter. This is due to their lack of gill covers and the fact that they have soft skin instead of scales. always good to be on the safe side there.

Good luck in the future with your GSP
