Is java moss and java moss ball same?
WOW!!! That question could start a REALLY interesting thread! :)

Simply said, they are not the same. Dang! I had a site that explained the difference well but closed the wrong tab and couldn't find again. :(

Bottom line is that one is natural and the other not. I MAY be wrong on this but I believe that "java moss" is actually a specific species of algae that tends to form somewhat spherical colonies while a "java moss ball" tends to come up as a man-made porous ball coated with the 'moss'.

Your question reminded me of what you asked from me before. Just for the record, my moss balls are aegagropila linnaei, (Marimo) if you are looking for something similar.

I have never encountered java moss balls but if they are man made then they can't be the same. Marimos are lake moss balls formed in the nature. And actually a type of algae they say. But harmless and seems that not eaten by algae eaters.

Yes, I would say they are the same except for the word 'ball'. While java moss and marimo moss are the same thing, or close enough, they are natural formations of living colonies. This is consistent as to a few personal searches I've done as I find the topic of interest....
