Is It Worth Using A Heater In Summer

Too bad chillers are so expensive when heaters are not.

The nights probably arent colder just "feel" colder because of the heat of the day. but ontopic i would just leave the heater on, its only going to come on if and when its needed anyway

Possible, but that's still bad because the temperature fluxuation is even larger.

You can make a cheapo DIY chiller by putting an external canister filter in a poly box filled with ice packs for the hottest part of summer.

now thats a good idea :) never thought of that before.

Now that IS a good idea! I could do that with the eheim external on the 30g if it gets too hot :shifty:

It tends to be cooler on a summer night, this is because during the heat of the day the sun burns away and overhanging clouds which during the night keep the heat of the sun in. this then creates a warm night. during the cooler months when the weather is cloudy, the clouds act as a barrier to stop the suns radiation from reaching the earths surface. this explains why it is cooler during the summer months. hope i made it explainable

beat me to it!!!

cloud cover in winter acts like a sort of blanket on the earth, traps air below it and keeps it warmer, in the summer there's no clouds so once the sun goes in and stops warming the air, it cools down a lot quicker

for cooling tanks in the summer, most important thing is oxygenation, warmer water holds less oxygen and generally this is why fish suffer in warmer water, just leaving the lid open so water can evaporate and adding extra aeration is usually plenty enough to handle a few degrees temp increase

If you never turn it off, you can't forget to turn it back on. I can't imagine it costs more than pennies a week when it's 'idling'.

I agree with it costing pennies a week, if it has an electronic controller. If it has a bi-metallic strip for temperature sensing it costs nothing.
