Is It Possible?

lol. I was wondering about the guppy molly thing because I have a female balloon molly with no male mollies and a fancy guppy male. I am interested to see if they ever produce any babies. She came from the petstore about 2 months ago and has produced one batch of fry which I believe was from the petstore.

Yep will of already been pregnant, they can hold sperm packets for up to 5-6 months. :)

5teady well your not the first person to do this!!!!! every other noobie reports this all the time.

If you worked so hard then please publish the photo's you must of taken the resulting fish!
I'll love to see them.

Also send your data to http://www.xiphophorus.org they would love to read the first official report on this crossing.

But if you then study of gonopodium structure of these fish you lurn that this first stage of impregnating is very different, ok to us it all looks the same but the structure's are very different.

I think you have failed to read all the posts m8 and especially the one where i corrected my mistake ;)

Im still confused. So do you think that babies were already pregnant? Or could they be some weird guppy shaped platy found in a guppy tank?

I am 95% sure that they was pregnant when you purchased them :)

Back to the original question then Krib

We all agree that fish cannot read, so whatever we say here, they will just do their own thing. :hyper:

You may think that you know all about fish being gravid etc etc, so do I, but I have a few mollies which I bought back from Guatemala in November. I separated one the other week to prepare for fry (she was showing early signs of being gravid). Unfortunately she developed a gonopodium. What I am trying to say is that the only way to be 100% sure the fish are gravid at all is when you get fry from them.

There are other reasons for fish to appear gravid, for instance they could have a blockage, a tumour or dropsy.

If they do have fry then grow up the babies and see what you get. In the (very) unlikely event that you have a molly / platy cross, it should be obvious quite early on as it is likely that some will look like mum, some like dad and some a mixture. If they all look like platies, then I am afraid you will have to accept that you haven't made history, just suffered from one of those unexplained things that makes keeping fish fun.

I do know most things about gravid spot's and im sure they are pregnant as one had fry today! There are some black one's, and some tansih one's. Really hard to see what's what, but we didnt bother to seperate them, so it's survival of the fitest( well, actually, the smartest, as they will hide in the plant's!) Also, i've had many fish have gravid spot's that werent pregnant or female. I only use the gravid spot when she look's pregnant. Other than that, i dont rely much on the gravid spot.

Well , you can be 100% sure that they were pregnant then . What does 'tasih ones' mean? I have never heard of the term.
