Is it ok to go fishing...

I don't eat beef or chicken but I eat fish. Isn't that odd? I guess its kind of funny that I only eat fish. I guess as a fish lover I would know how healthy it is to eat them instead of eating beef or chicken though!

When you think about it, the japanese, some of the first fishkeepers, eat massive amounts of fish. Have you ever seen an old japanese guy carve up some sushi? It was probably his buddy. And he was delicious.

I don't know, I never had a problem keeping fish and then eating that yummy grouper filet. But then I have no problem eating meat either. If I could convert my swimming pool to a grouper pond, I would. :p

That thing weighs more than me!!

I only think eating meat and owning pets is hypocritical if you're eating your pets . I mean heck, I eat meat all the time, but I'd never eat anyone I know personally ;)

I don't fish because I'm too lazy to drive to the lake. I don't eat fish much because I dislike seafood. At this point I think that if I were to go fishing I'd be too tempted to set up a tank for local species

Have a peek at your jar of flake food! That's right, full of fish! If you can feed fish to your fish, why not feed fish to their owner. And fish caught on a line is dispatched more quickly and humanely than fish commercially caught (I have been out with trawlers so I know). So enjoy your fishing trip! I certainly intend to carry on enjoying mine.

Hmmm, good question. I've fished before, but it's been a number of years. The last time I fished, I used a net to catch a few native fish for an aquarium for natives.

I've heard that getting hooked is pretty painful for the fish.

I've recently gotten a juvenile Pacu (yes, I'm going to have to buy a HUGE tank) that's a popular sport fish for anglers in South America and the Far East. Probably, as the Pacu grows bigger and becomes a bigger part of our family (no pun intended), I will have some misgivings about fishing.

I really don't have any philosophical or moral problems with eating animal flesh. I do have a problem with causing unnecessary pain to animals, though.

So, I guess, call me ambivalent on the issue of owning fish and fishing fish.

I love fishing, It's relaxing, especially sea fishing on a sunny day in a boat, rocking to and fro, ahhh.

My brother when he was a kid actually caught his pet goldfish out if it's tank after he had come back from a fishing trip.

And then he put it back. I told him it was cruel. But the fish lived for a further 14 years after that.

here comes the kfc debate again... at least i warned you!

if you purchased any of the animals in your family, most would say that you own them. yes, all of my animals are part of my family. heck, everybody sleeps in my bed with me. (except of course those that don't breathe air) :)

i say it is hypocritical to have pets and eat meat because there is no difference among animals. why love one and love to eat another? in vietnam, dogs are a popular main course, in south america, it's guinea pigs. in india, it's mad to eat a cow. do these ideals hold with you? probably not. but why? why not eat a dog instead of a cow? it would probably be better for you. less sat fat perhaps? :)

as for fishing, what seperates an oscar from a trout? an oscar might taste just as yummy. there are people who keep "food fish" as pets. it's silly to spend hours on a forum to better the life of your aquarium fish and then go out and pull hooks through their cousins. it just doesn't make sense to me. i admit, fishing does seem like a lot of fun...kind of like the claw machine in the arcade...it's the allure of working to catch something for your own.

and ironicly, i believe fish is the only meat that is meant to be eaten by man, but i wouldn't ever do it. i don't think it's wrong to eat fish but for people like us who spend so much of our time learning about the care for our pet fish, i do find it a bit hypocritical.

The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work! I might feel different about eating the fish I catch if I was catching Swordtails, but a Northern Pike or a Salmon just does not work in an aquarium.

Oh boy. Please, let's not turn this into a vegitarianism debate; we had more than enough of those back in chat.

I used to fish when I was a young child, but my hook went through a Sunny's eye one day, and that pretty well ruined fishing for me for life.

Presently, I'm a vegan, so eating fish and fishing are both out of the question, and I also stick to species that are bred captively and relatively "domesticated" so far as how long they've been raised by man and how they fair in a captive environment. I consider my fish real pets, not centerpieces or breeding stock.
However, I think fish keeping differs from your average pet trade in that many people do not get them as companion animals, but as nice decorative additions to thier room, or a hobby. When you view an animal as an item rather than a living thing, it sortof takes away the empathy for the species, so I'm not too surprised that so many fishkeepers eat fish and go fishing. So, I would say it is probably only hyprcritical if you love fish, and consider them pets, and take great care of them (maybe even fight for thier humane care), then go out impale them through the mouth with a hook, suffocate them on a dock, and gut them for entertainment.

Fishing isnt all about killing the fish you catch. Here in England fishing is done more as a passtime or sport than to catch food and on most fisheries all the fish must be returned alive to the water immiedietly after capture (unless its a competition in which case they are held in a very long net for the duration of the match, usually 5 hours), barbless hooks must be used to keep any damage caused to the fishes mouths to a minimum and the ammount of bait each angler can use is limited to prevent pollution to the water. The fish have their health monitered by the staff at the fishery and are treated accordingly should there be any signs of disease, a far cry from the bloodthirsty image most people seem to have of fishing.

I dont fish as much as i used to but before i was a family man i was a dedicated competition angler and spent at least two days a week sitting by a river or lake testing my skills against other anglers.

No one ever said you couldn't love the fish you were eating. I love all animals just as much as I love the ones that live with me. Just because I'm fryin him up doesn't mean I didn't love the animal in my pan.

If you were hiking through the woods and a bear atacked you and you were forced to shoot it, would you have to say you didn't love it, I don't think so.

I'm not saying this to be negative in any way. I tend to question things and I've never had a chance to discuss this topic with anyone of intelligence, which is why Im taking this opportunity.

Unfortunately this perception is spreading to other animals as well. People come to my store all the time who have dogs or cats and really only view them as an accent to their home and not as a living creature.

I did have guy come into my store once who had a 75 gallon fish tank and all his fish were dying because they had ich and he was pissed because the fish were expensive. It turns out his tank was overstacked and he had never done a water change. He also poured and entire bottle of rid ich in his tank because he thought it would cure the fish faster.

I explained to him everything that was wrong and how to fix it. For 40 minutes he insisted that there had to be some sort of stuff he could just drop in the water and he would never have to do anything again, especially water changes. He cringed when I would mention water changes.

He ended up not listening to my advice and stole a water test kit.

This jerk is the kind of person that sees animals as an accent and not a living creature. The perceptions of the truly ignorant can not be changed, but there are many who can change. The reason there seem to be so many ignorant peopl is because society promotes ignorance.

This guy actually thought there was a magical potion that you could pour into the tank and you would never have to do anything again.

Fishing is how i got into aquatics, i never kill the fish just do it to look at them i even fished in my cold water tank once the easiest way to catch a tench! :flex: now i am tropical have never tried it :D
