He looks like a nipped up VT or possibly just recovering from fin rot? I don't think the extended rays are even enough to look like a combtail.

Hrm, he doesn't look like my old boy Tyson, who was a combtail for definite.

It's so hard to define tail types VT/Comb tail bettas, most likely to be a mutt[in the most positive manner that can be said]. I'd really have to go with a scruffy VT as guppy dude has said, but just not in that dull manner. Very pretty colours he has, the blue is like just an outline on his anal fin!

Then again, looking closer looks like there's a tear in his tail and his anal fin as well, like a chunk missing rather than just ragged edges.

Yeah, I can imagine he had a rough life before coming to live with us. He was like that when he came to us but he was always very beautiful. I know you can't see it in the pic but his eyes are actually half blue and half red. Thanks for everybody input so far!
