So I'm looking at picking up a new tank, but I figured at 75 gallons it would be about time to abandon the HOB filters and go external. I wasn't even aware of the existence of wet/dry filters before I started looking, and they seem like they'd do a good job and you can also build your own.
My question is are they much better than a canister? Also, is it imperative that you have the aquarium drilled to run the plumbing up for the overflow? It seems like it would be, but I can't find a ton of information on them after some googling (well nothing absolutely clear anyhow).
PS I can't believe how expensive some of those canister filters are. I see everyone recommending the FX5, only to find it's almost $400. Geez! Makes me want to get another AC50 and just run two HOBs for the darn price! Just not sure if externals are really that much better.
