After reading online I noticed most people recommended having 2 inches deep sand. My tank is 4x2x2.5 feet and holds just over 550 litres of water. 2 inches deep sand will weigh 50 kg. Is this safe?

Don't forget that the sand will be spread out over the floor of your tank so the weight will be distributed.

You might find you don't need that much. I have a 3 foot tank with about 1 inch towards the front and up to 2-3 inches in other places (nice hills and around plants) and I've only put in about 12-13 kg of sand.

Given that it's just one tenth the weight of the water, it's probably fine.

Actually I try to use a pound of substrate to each gallon. Translating the units that means I would want more like 65 Kg for a tank that size. It is not too much at all.

i did my 180 litre today and used around 40kg give or take. it is about 2 inches deep all over though. i think i need to take some out
