So Hi! :D Long fishie story ahead!

3 weeks ago when I went to Walmart, I looked around the fish section, which seemed good (you never can tell but even that short while ago I knew little about most fish besides basic care and that I wanted one). I wanted a betta, as I had researched some about them and found them very beautiful. I picked up a 10 gallon tank and some supplies, but the bettas seemed lethargic and dirty, aside from about 3 - a female and male of the same coloring, and a dark red male. I miss the female and male, they were such a wonderful color and I can't even describe them. They were a pale splotchy color, but I could tell the color wasn't a sick-looking color - it was very lovely. Subtle.

Anyway, the goldfish were cleaner and more lively so I purchased one. The funny part was there were no real containers so I put him in a female betta container, which was just big enough for him, and the lady at the counter rung my GOLDFISH up as a betta. So that's how my male goldie became a betta in drag. But it might be a girl anyway. I won't know yet, and I'm not interested in breeding.

He seemed lonely that night in my tank, which my Betta-owner friend helped me acclimate him to, so we got him a couple corycats the next day - which we also acclimated and introduced, and they're all doing splendidly. Cycling is going well, doing daily vacuuming and water changes.

NOW TO BETTAS AGAIN. :) My sister purchased a betta from Petco, the day and place I got the corycats. The water was clean and they were mostly lively - and there were so many, I felt bad anyway. She picked one whose color is nice, but frankly I think there were many, many more interesting ones. The Betta-owning one and I were really admiring a dark black and green, and many others.

He's already made a bubble nest and I'm pretty sure he recognizes me, I visit him every day and do the water changes for him every 4-5 days.

I still want a betta. Pretty badly. I think as soon as I scrounge up 15 bucks I'm going out to get a 2.5 gallon and fishie. They're so gorgeous! Maybe I'll get a female. I don't know, I'll find one that just calls out to me. How do you guys pick your fishies? I like the soulmate way, just looking until one calls out or something.

I also want to eventually buy a 30-gallon, another goldie, and more corycats. I need a job to support my new fish obsession. They're so engaging and fun, I love being responsible for them and caring for them.

Only 2 years until college and then what will go down with all these fish! My mother may get her wish for me to stay at home after all. Good thing I don't care where I go - fish are so much more interesting than far-away schools. Hahah, I think I've turned into a total fish nerd.

Thanks if you made it through all this babble!

Thankfully I got into fish and cats after I hated the college that was 10+ hours drive away from home.... Now I go to the state college that's about 10 minutes away, and I can get my living expenses paid for by the fam, so I can spend my extra cash on my adopted "kids".

It's really addictive. I started with a 5 gallon, made tons of bad mistakes, got things sorted out, and now I have what's in my sig. Still working on the the 'rent to let me set up a 55 in the living room as a betta sorority. :good:

I'm glad to hear you're going to upgrade your tank for the goldfish. They really do need about 20 gallons to start and from 10 to 20 extra per fish. They're very "dirty" fish and so need a lot of room for the wastes to dissapate. They also get really large :X, or I'd have one myself.

I personally always go for the betta in need. It's how I ended up with two - I went to buy the 20 gallon for a snail only tank, and ended up seeing this poor forgotten betta in the back of a shelf where it shouldn't have been. The water was brown - he probably hadn't been fed in over a week, and he had fin rot... He's fine and happy and healthy now and loves his big tank. :D To each their own, though. All seven of my cats were considered unadoptable for various reasons. And I think they're all fine and dandy!

I'd love to save a cutey with something like fin rot - where I went to today, things deteriorated in the few weeks for the bettas I saw. But, I don't really have the money or experience to do any good for big problems, though I'd like to. :( Glad to hear of your experiences! And that your college is close to your babies, haha.

I cleaned the house and made a few bucks today! So dad and I went to the LFS, where I bought a cute 2.5 gallon acrylic tank, some decorations, and my first betta! She's a girl. She looked spunkier than almost everyone I saw, and I saw a lot of males with spunk, even some bubble nests and flaring-at-the-female-males. I love her coloring - orangey-red fins and an orangey-mottled body. They were selling males for 7 dollars, and females for 2.50 (USD) - and she looked lovelier than anyone in my opinion, I adore her. I've been acclimating her for over an hour now as I really want things to go slowly and smoothly. My home pH is higher than the lfs pH so slowly can't hurt. When I presented her cup to my sister's betta just so he could see her, he flared and strutted more than I'd ever seen him do, aw.

Pictures! Sorry for blurry and dark quality:

Oh yeah, her name is Siobhan (sha-vahn), after the chorus of a lovely song by the walkmen. Chorus goes "hang on, Siobhan!" so I thought it'd fit. :D

She's real cute :) She actually looks like she's got faded colours right now. I think she will colour up a little more for you soon. :good:

Very nice gal! I'm partial to the odd colors like orange and yellow, too!

2.50 is cheap for a female. Males and females are priced the same around here, but top price is 5 bucks.

:D Wow! Such a cute girl. Never kept girls with success but that is the lfs fault not mine! :good: :good:

Thanks for the warm welcomes to her. haha.

Someone said something about her being faded, wow were they right! As soon as she had a few minutes in her tank she deepened up, but I thought it was just that it was dim in my room and I was seeing things - but when i woke up this morning to a betta face right in mine, it was on par with the most vivid red I've seen in bettas in photos and such. I definitely need to find some batteries and show her off. She's so lovely I could cry!

I'll go out and get some bloodworms for her definitely, aw. I think she likes Beethoven, btw.

Pictures - sorry for blurriness!

Last one, of her tank - it captures her color best, but even so, it's even better in person.
