Stem plants like Hygro and ludwiga species suck the nurtients in through their leaves, opposed to roots. I don't think it would hurt to add in a good allround trace element fertalizer. That will add all the nutrients that aren't readily available in the substrate, so long as you aren't heavily planted, or have tons of light. Then you would need to add nitrates and phosphates as well.

Is Seachem Flourish a good allround trance element fertilizer?

Also, does anyone know if stem plants really benefit from root tablets/sticks? I know they're usually for plants that require fertilizer in the substrate, but what will happen if I use it on stem plants? Algae issues or great plant growth. (keeping in mind I have over 2.5 wpg and CO2)

Flourish is what I was using before I realised that I was using way to little. I would have been going through a bottle a week! For the EI method we normally dose 5ml trace for every 20 US gallons. Since needing that much, I decided to buy CSM+b from gregwatson.com.

Thanks for replying Jen. Why did you have had to go through so much in a week? I've still to get my head around the EI method, just need an hour or two to sit down, and read it all through. What is CSM+b? Can I just use it by itself, without adding anything for N, P and K.
