I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere on the internet that someone placed iron bars in the substrate to help emit nutrients when it rusted. Is this a good idea? I think it would eventually turn the water rusty brown even if you changed it every week. Thanks again!

i always thought that iron was a bad thing to be in a tank ?? i read on the internet that some one keeps one of the copper pan scoures in there tank
to deter white spot, also thought that copper was bad for fish, i don't think i'd try any of these things in my tank, ;)

I've not heard of this but I think that it would be a better idea just to buy iron minerals to put into your tank. Iron is not the only mineral your fish need and you might as well buy the iron minerals while you are getting fertiliser and the rest of the stuff for planted tanks.. like you said I think it would just muck up the water quality and turn it into a horrible brownish colour.

There are a few things out there that contain iron and other trace nutrients for plants that are safe to use. A majority of those needed and or used by people who have planted tanks use the products by Seachem.

Once you are on their site you will want to go to the top where it says "products" click on that. Then you will want to click on "browse by product group" (it's a drop down). Find the one that says "Freshwater- Planted". This will take you to the list of things they make for the planted tank. Click on the name of the product to read a bit about it. Rose

The local nightclub has a 6 X 2 X 2 tank with a rather large oscar in it, he also has a rather rusty looking anchor in there too. He has had this setup for many years now. The water does go a little cloudy but not as bad as you would have thought. The oscar looks in good health too but showing it's age now.

I personally wouldn't have it in there, beside it looks stupid!
