Hi every one. I am new to the site because i was setting up my new aquarium and looking for info on the fish. I have been reading posts and have enjoyed the information i have gathered.

I have a 75 gallon tank that was given to me with a stand, two fluval 305 filters, rocks and decorations. they had a case of brown mold that wiped out the tank and did not want to invest the time into cleaning everything.

I have three Bala Sharks ((silver fish) I know they will quickly out grow my tank and have made arrangements), and three male guaramies. I plan to get three or four green tiger barbs and a couple black snails.

i had issued with my filters leaking and someone siphening the water out of the tank onto the carpet (it was not me). but since i have resolved those issues i have had no problems

I have done my homework with the aquarium start up stuff and have a bit of knowledge and would love to try to help any one who needs it. feel free to ask me questions on this thread.

did you filter your tank before adding in the sharks?
with the shark, it will most likely target your other fish and eat them. so in the long run putting small fish with them is not a good idea.
the sharks like to have TONS of swimming space, so in the future when they become larger you will have to either upgrade their home to the proper size tank or rehome them.

Yes they love my aquarium. They are small now and I have made arrangements for a larger home when the time comes. They are not really sharks... they get along well with my guaramie. The bala sharks are actually distantly related to carps. the guaramie hide most of the time and do not come out until it is feeding time.

If you're going to get tiger barbs, I recommend that you get about 8 at least. Be careful though, as tiger barbs are fun nippers so your gouramis might get nipped.

What type of gourami do you have?
Did you cycle your tank before adding the fish?
Oh, also, :hi: to the forum

I have three males. They are the orange striped ones. I have a volcano with a bubbler so I though they would go well. That and they are beautiful.

That you for the heads up on the barbs and for the welcome.

+1 for tiger barbs nipping gouramis

So you don't know the exact species?
Are they by any chance "dwarf gouramis"?
Unless your tank is heavily planted, you will probably find them fighting as male gouramis are territorial.

They are indeed dwarfs. I have it planted artificially... they seem to be fine... just after i typed that my girl came in and told me they were fighting... so that blows that out of the water... I hope they are just establishing a pecking order... probably not though... I am going to start making arrangements...

thanks for the heads up...

LOL.
No problems, you could keep two but three is a bit far. As long as there is lots of things that will break their line of sight they would be fine. If not, you will have to rehome two of them :/

ok they were setting up territories from what i can tell. They were not making contact they were flaring and chasing... as soon as i turned the moon light on they stopped and went back to hiding... I will keep a close eye on them and look for a new home for one of them.

that brings me to a question i have not been able to find a answer to. Do moon lights add any benefit to an aquarium with out live plants other then visual? i herd that if you have nocturnal fish that it allows you to enjoy them more as they will come out with it on. I also herd that it could potentially harm the fish not giving them enough darkness. I also found info that would suggest it could allow algae to grow more. Any one know anything factual about moon lights and not so much opinion?

I don't completely know so its not factual but I think that the moonlights are just for viewing purposes.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that the fish don't see the blue light so it shouldn't harm them but, like I said, I'm not completely sure ????
