how long does it take an untreated fish to die from internal parasites?

have you treated for internal parasites.
If there infested with them they cause internal damage.
Once a fish is really skinny the meds is usually to late due to the internal damage.
You still have to treat the tank to save the rest of the fish that are not showing signs of internal parasites,.

As for the question on how long it takes for parasites to kill them I don't know.
Best to destroy a fish once it's really wasted away.

well, my fish is not wasting away. instead, it's really bloated. bacterial meds didn't help and neither did epsom salt baths or dips. peas had no effect either.

it may be dropsy which is nigh on incurable and fatal. Do the scales look like pinecones sticking out? if not it may not have reached that stage yet as it happens near the end.

It could it be constipation? Try feeding squished up blanched peas.

When a fish looks bloated dosn't always mean internal parasites.
It can mean constipation, dropsy, swim bladder, internal parasites.

Like gilli has asked do scales stick out.
Have you stopped feeding for a few days.

Internal parasite signs are.
long stringy white poo or clear mucas poo.
Enlarged anus or red inflamed anus.
Looking skinny or bloated.
Sunken in belly.
Bent spine sometimes.
Sometimes the fish can swim on there sides with internal parasites.
Worms prutruding from the anus.

if it was dropsy, i doubt she'd still be alive after 2 months. and it's most likely not internal parasites, so i guess she's just eggbound.

what're the disadvantages of treating with an internal parasites med when the fish doesn't have internal parasites, other than stress?

edit: i just noticed that some of the scales on her belly have a black outline. i could only see it clearly when the side with said scales was exposed to bright light. could this be internal parasites?

You use epson salt baths on egg bound fish aswell.
Also a bacterial med just incase of an internal infection.
Black linning around the scales not sure what that mean.
Black patches are ammonia burns that are healing.
Do you keep any neon tetra's in the same tank.
