I'm currently cycling a Rio 180 with a Juwel Internal filter and a Eheim 2213 external filter. This is the first time I've used 'proper' filters as I've been running an undergravel tank for 8 years.

My question is, is it bad to have an internal and external filter? People always seem to have one or the other and not both.

bad, no, i don't beleave so. not sure that you can over filter a tank.

the 2213 gives a flow of 390ltr per hour, though the pump is rated at 440. the Juwel filter will most likely be a 600ltr pump, so your tank will be well filtered but i feel this is no danger.

one advantage may be that you can virtually instantly cycle any tank you wish, may be a boon if you need to quarentene or medicate fish!!! the loss of the smaller filter will have no real impact, and the fresh pads will soon be thriving again.

Nope, no problems at all. My only problem with the internal Juwel filters is cleaning them. You can never have enough filtration imo.
