I've seen this in my research a few times. The basic science behind it makes sense, but I'm not sure that it really results in any workable theory. The truth is that the planted aquarium community has done the math on watts per gallon, figured out what worked vis a vis wattages, and know what you generally need for any particular kind of standard sized tank out there. This info isn't hard to find. The beginner really need not worry about calculating WPG, because they can turn to info on the internet and see that "for a tank of g gallons, x watts is sufficient for low light, y watts sufficient for medium light, z watts sufficient for high light", and so forth.

So yeah, the idea makes perfect sense generally, but, if you aren't trying to plant strangely sized or shaped tanks, need it really play that much of a role in your daily life?
