Hello,

Right now I have started with a ten gallon to tank to experiment with and learn about the art of fish keeping. In a year or so I hope to get a large tank, something like 50 gallons.

Anyways, I'm semi interested in stocking it with Japanese fish. I love Japan and I love the Japanese and their culture. So naturally, I'd like to get Japanese fish. So my questions are, are Japanese fish saltwater or freshwater? And what are some popular Japanese fish?

Thanks,
Jordan

Try a search on coy. Is that what you're looking for? They're coldwater fish that require a lot of room. 50 gallons may be big enough for one. I'm not sure of other "Japanese" fish, though. Can you get a picture showing the ones you speak of? People here should be able to identify them.

Here's a pic of coy

Brian, thanks for your input.

I was thinking something along the lines of only a couple inches long, though. I'm not too into the 'bigger' fish...

Are you interested in any kind of fish from Japan?

Like xoedusk mentioned there's the traditional koi fish which are freshwater & coldwater. But there are also rice fish, fugu puffers, gobies, carps, smelts, eels, etc. These range from freshwater to brackish to saltwater.

EDIT: If you can find them a group of Japanese rice fishes would work well in your 10 gallon tank. They are freshwater.

After I went to bed last night, I had a dream of all of the Japanese fish you wanted. I think they were made up though... can't remember what they were or what they looked like now.

Amano shrimps are Japanese, aren't they?

I looked it up; yep, you're right. Should have realized it sooner since Amano is a Japanese name. Oh well, I'm slow. ... I would think 3 or 4 amano shrimps would be great in a 10 gallon tank with 1 or 2 japanese trapdoor snails. :D

EDIT: I just saw that Cherry Fire Shrimps are from Japan too.
