I was just finishing up a water change on my 20gal planted tank, when I noticed my big red swordtail had a injury. I think it happened during the water change, as I have some sticks in the tank. It looks she pulled up one of her scales . I'm wondering if there is anything I should do for this? Since the tank is densely planted I would rather not medicate unless I really have to. Will it be OK to let it heal on its own with good water quality and some good food? Also will the scale fall off and a new one grow back, or will it reattach itself?

Scales grow and fall off with age so there should be a new one under it. Maybe a bit of tonic to the water might help too.

As for the sticks, if they arent meant to be there as in the wild like mangroves then you should remove them as youll see more injuries
