Hi all,

Yes yet another is it or isn't it pregnant question I'm afraid as have just inherited 3 supposedly black lyre tail mollies and I don't really want them giving birth in my main tank if they are pregnant.

(Apologies for the picture quality)

They are definitely 2 females and a male.

Any help appreciated

hey,
im pretty sure the one in the first pic is almost ready to pop
try to gently move it to a small temporary tank or ,as a last resort, a breeding net

im pretty sure the one in the first pic is almost ready to pop

And we have a winner :D came down this morning to find in the breeding trap a much smaller female and about 30 baby mollies!!! :good: The missus has already set about the arduous task of naming them all

So next question, my fry tank is yet to cycle completely and yet I have another requiring the net breeder which is currently occupied, how do I speed up the cycling process?

To speed up remove half the water and replace with tank water, if u have a filter use some material from the main tank.

As fry have a bio load of almost 0 u can introduce them all at once, but u still need to make sure you ammonia and nitrites are 0 as they will kill fry at tiny levels.

Cheers Helter :good: ... I was wondering when I was going to hear from you! Just to be on the safe side I've bought another breeding net to keep the fry in and will continue to keep them in there until the tank has fully cycled. The filter in the fry tank is just an air powered songe filter so can I just put a filter pad from my mature filter into the fry tank by itself?

kpintheshed:-..........why do i lough every time i see your avatar!!!!!!!!!

fishnterrapins:- A filter pad will help but u need to hang it near the out let of the sponge filter or most the bacteria will die in it due to lack of oxygen as in a power filter they get a large turn over of water.

But using mature water is just as good and using some of the gravel and stuff from the mature tank as it all has good bacteria on it.

love to see some baby molly pic

Your wish is my command lol

Will try and get some more when the other female gives birth and when I move them into their own tank rather than in that horrible net thing (but hey needs must right?) Thats as good as I can get for now I'm afraid

Cheers mate. When I set it up I used water out of the main tank rather than new stuff so I'll give it a few more days and then test it again.

Ye that will be fine, run the sponge in the main tank till your ready that will help get the bacteria growning already as well.

Right sponge filter is now running on the main tank just for a bit to keep it going. Ordered last bits for fry tank today so should be ok to go by the end of the week me thinks. :good: cheers mate your a legend

They do? I've had fry when my tank unfortunetely mini-cycled and the ammonia got up to 4. Somehow they all managed to stay healthy and live!

4mg? or 0.4mg as 4 mg is very high at any size of fish.

4mg. I was surprised when the mini-cycle ended that not even one of my fish died or had gotten a disease. I'm beggining to worry that my test kit is faulty eve though it's a AP Master Liquid Test Kit.

I filled up a 10 gallon tank half way and put some sand in it for my tadpoles are they are becoming frogs. I put regular old tap water in. Then a feeder guppy gave birth that night. I put 10 babies in the small tank as I figuerd they would die anyway. Well, the tank wasnt cycled and the babies are still alive.
