Inherited Fish

I filled up a 10 gallon tank half way and put some sand in it for my tadpoles are they are becoming frogs. I put regular old tap water in. Then a feeder guppy gave birth that night. I put 10 babies in the small tank as I figuerd they would die anyway. Well, the tank wasnt cycled and the babies are still alive.

If your tank was cycled for the tadpoles that's probably all that was needed. For the first couple weeks at least, and I would venture to guess month as well, fry waste is so minimal that it gives the bacteria plenty of time to grow to keep up with it. The bacteria split approximately every 8 hours. Most of the time you'll be okay with the fry without cycling it, but providing some substrate from a cycled tank is always best.

Ok next question, been out at lfs all day and couldn't get a satisfactory answer so a couple of questions:

1) At the moment I'm feeding on a mixture of crushed tropical flake and herbivore flake with a bit of crushed freeze dried daphnia thrown in there for good measure 3 -4 times a day but have in the past used liquifry and aquarian growth food are any of these any good?
2) In the fry tank does there need to be a light. So people say that fry don't need a light apparently. The tank is in the lounge and has natural light all day.

Thats all for now, cheers for all the help guys I really appreciate it

Liquifry is good. I actually just use crushed flakes. They'll do fine on that.

Natural light is what fish get in nature. There is no need for a light. You don't want directly sunlight into a tank as you have the possibility of an algae bloom if you have a bioload buildup.

I feed mine Hikari First bites or liiquifry. Liqifry can stunt growth if feed to often. I learned the hard way.

Cool, I won't bother ordering any liquifry then ... they do seem happy enough eating the crushed flake etc I'm offering them. Cheers guys, once the fry tank is set up I'll post a few pictures up to check its ok.

Well after a day spent trudgin round in the rain for the missus finally got to the lfs, bought a few plants and other things and came home to finish setting up the fry tank.

Quick run down, some sort of air powered sponge filter at the back right (bought of ebay), mopani wood on the right (which I've soaked but it still seems to be releasing some tannin ... will the dry be ok about that?), some little terracotta aquarium plant pots at the front just cause I think they look nice, sand substrate and a couple of plants at the back (no idea what plants they are.) I intend to add more plants (when I have the money) at the back all the way round behind the wood. Finally the light (which I wasn't going to have) was, I think, a good find. I've never heard of them before but I found an arcadia pygmy light at my local lfs and that seems to be doing fine in the tank. Thats it ...

Oh and for those of you with good eyes, yes there is no heater in there at the moment cause its coming from aquatics-online next tuesday.

Any advice appreciated.
