So I was just wondering, has anyone else used the ceramic or plastic incense burners as tank decor? the have "cave like" feeling to them, and a few average sized holes for smaller fish to swim thru. and they dont seem to affect my fish (had them in the tank since i got the first fish 2 months ago) in fact my single baby fry enjoys hiding in them because its easy to escape the bigger fish...

I would guess that plastic is generally OK, but watch out for the ceramics. If there is lead in the glaze it should not be put in the tank. Generally, if it is safe for humans to eat off of, it's safe for the tank. Since your items would not be used this way, I would be suspicious of them.

Alright, ill still keep an eye on them and see if they affect the fish or my water

I'm a bit confused now because plants come with lead weights that are fine for planting, so why would lead in the glaze be harmful???

That's a good question. I use those weights to sink zucchini for my Bristlenose plecos and don't seem to have a problem. Well, I'm sure that there's something wrong with some, not all, of the glazes used for ceramics but maybe it's not lead.

Can someone clear this up?

I thinks it's because the lead is not soluable in a solid mass but baked into something it will leach out as its already broke down

Also I would imagine it wouldn't be lead glaze as they're made to have a hot thing on them ( Insense cones) so They wouldn't want them kicking off leaf vapours either :good:

Lead in lead weights isn't soluble in water as bae says.

Not sure about ceramics though... terracotta flower pots are ok to put in your tank, as are pipes of the same... perhaps you can find an oil burner made of the same stuff - that would theoretically be alright?
