Hi was reading about cichlids and came across this:

If your tap water falls between 7.5 and 8.5 you have good water, and are best off using it as-is, with no adjustments. More important is KH, which acts as a buffer and keeps the PH stable. A KH of 8 or more is most desirable.

what does the KH stand for?

cheers

put simply kh is a measure of the 'hardness' of the water, some fish species do better in hard water. A reading of 8 is over 140 ppm very hard. Scott

kH is the measurement of the buffering capacity or alkalinity of the water. Carbonate ions attract free Hydrogen ions to maintain the pH.

GH is general hardness which is the hardness referred to when considering whether fish prefer hard or soft water.

Dave.
