Ive had my 35 litre tank set up for about 14 weeks now and recently purchased a syphon (Algarde syphoning set) to use on my sand bed (fish have only been in the tank 10 days as the water parameters for ammonia and nitrite have only just reached 0).
If anything the syphon pushed all of the dirt away therefore creating whirling sand around my aquarium along with lumps of dirt - the syphon only sucked up water yet it didnt seem to be working properly as it reached so far and then fell back into the tank?
Please what do I do? Ammonia and nitrite levels have now spiked and im fearful of my fish dying! :(

Just to add, I dont think this is a normal syphon, it does not have a tube at the end it has a white strainer? I really do not get how to use this!

Have you got a picture? It should be very straightforward. Large opening end to pick up the waste and the smaller end in a bucket or sink...
