Alrighty, soon I will be dividing my 5.5 gal and keeping bettas in it. I don't know yet about having a filter, I have to find one first so I might just keep them without a filter. There will most likely be 3 in the tank. How much do I clean the tank with or without the filter? Right now mine live in 1 gals, and I clean them like 80% every week and the fishies are doing fine. This is my first bigger tank so any help is greatly apprechiated thx.

Three bettas in a five gallon can be fine even though IMO two would be perfect. They'd have more room to swim. WIth 3 in there the water will get fouled up quickly so I think you should do at least 80% (if possible 100%) water change weekly. My boys are mostly in 1 gallons that I do 100% change weekly and still my crowntails are getting curled fins! I'm so glad yours are doign well.

You really should be doing 100% changes weekly now, with a 1 gallon.

I'll agree though, with 3 bettas to a 5 gallon unfiltered tank, you'll want to do weekly 100% changes. I guess if you filter it, you might could get away with 45-70% changes every 10 days or so.

I change about 70-75% of the water weekly on my 22 gallon that has 8 because the water gets so dirty if I go any longer. Betta's are not the cleanest of litte Mr.'s lol. Nasty boys.

Ok, will definetely invest in a filter! I'll be living in a uni dorm, so it will be easier. Someone told me to use a sponge filter because bettas like them. I know you can make them but I don't know if I'll be able to find the materials while I am at uni. So can you buy them as well? How strong would they have to be?
Thx

Personally I wouldn't use a sponge filter for 3 bettas in a 5 a gllon tank. I don't much care for sponge filters myself, others swear by them.

Yes you can buy them, in a variety of sizes, at your local pet/fish store. I have never seen them at Walmart though.

Personally I would just get a 5 gallon whisper filter, stick a bit of sponge filter foam (also avaliable at your LPS or LFS) on the intake end of the filter and call it a day.

thx so much, and I'll see about dividing it into 2 instead. I just don't have a whole lot of room in the dorm and if I split it into 3 that will still be over a gal per fish.
