Hey guys,
We woke up this morning to find my dog with really sore eyes..she can only open one and it looks really sticky and the eyeball doesnt even look straight

the only thigs we can think of is dirt going in her eyes when she was swimming yesterday, or a few days ago she was near a rabbit that had myxamatosis.. does anyone know if this can spread to dogs?

please reply ASAP...as she'll be going to the vets as soon as someone can take her.
p.s my aunty has come down to look as she is really good with dogs..and she thinks it could be bad.

thanks corey.

I doubt its myxy, in all my years of shooting, I've never heard of any cases.

Two dogs and 16 rabbits, so maybe I can help a bit too :)

Myxi is not zoonotic and it doesn't spread beyond the species it was created for - the only things that can catch it or be affected by it are rabbits.

What breed of dog is she?

It sounds to me like conjuncitivitis. I'm not a vet, I'm a pathologist (humans), but if it's sticky and gluing together it's most likely an infection of the conjunctiva. The soreness is usually a result of the animal rubbing at its eye because it's itchy and painful. The wonkiness you think you're seeing is probably because it's so irritated and/or painful....it's like someone trying to prize your eye open when you've got a bit of grit in it yourself - it's had to look straight ahead and so forth.

The alternative which can present with the same symptoms is an ulcer or abrasion, usually of the cornea, which may have become slightly infected. Your vet will be able to see this by putting a couple of drops of fluorescein - a dye - into the eye and then fluorescing under UV light.

Obviously it's difficult to diagnose remotely, but these are the two most likely and both are easy to treat. The sticky goo is a sign of slight infection, whether it's caused by bacterial/viral/irritant conjunctivitis or an abrasion. If both are sore, it's probably conjunctivitis. She needs to see a vet anyway to diagnose properly - keep us posted :)

could just be conjunctivitis or something in the eye irritating it. i wouldnt jump to conclusions until you've seen a vet. good luck!!

thnx for the replies guys:)

well shes just been to the vets...turns out she has and ulcer behind each eye which is quite rare seeing as its in both eyes. Not sure what brought it on over night. Anyway shes had some eye drops and antibiotics and my dads picking up the rest of the med after work.

she looks a little happier now, and her eyes can open slightly now and shes lying down with one paw over her head, so yeah hope all goes well.
Thanks Corey.

p.s btw shes a some sort of mungrel.. a bit of everything :good:

on the point of nothing apart from rabbits being able to catch myxymatosis i was told by a wildlife ranger that it can transfer to humans in some way if you come into contact with the affected rabbits, is this true?

no, well sorta.

There has only ever been 1 recorded death from handling a rabbit.

Its so rare its almost impossible, and its not actually myxy they pass on but a viral infection.

It is even safe to eat myxy rabbits, but uh..no thanks!

hahaha you telling me i would NEVER even touch a myxy rabbit, they looked horrible, all the ones ive seen ive just whomped a rock onto their head to put em out of their misery, they were always crawling about all disorientated and breathing heavily, its not a nice sight.
