so i got myself a mated pair of imbellis about a month ago after over 6 years of searching. i love them, i finally have them situated in their final home, which is a 3 gallon picotope tank with red sea HOB power filter (the out put if baffled to decrease surface disturbance), marine land 10 watt stealth pro heater, and 50/50 9 watt compact florescent. anyway here are a couple pictures for you all to enjoy.

Bella (the female), her fins are healing nicely now (Jacob was a little aggressive with trying to mate at first)

the picture isn't the best. i'm 99% sure he is an imbellis though, the only difference is his body isn't as elongated as my female's. he has the blue gill plates and the red coloration on the edges of his fins exactly like the pictures you posted, and even has the spots on his dorsal fin with no spots on his caudal fin. he also has the white tips on his pelvic fins. the only thing putting doubt in my mind is the shape of his body.

It looks like it is a PK Cross.

hmmm, ok. i was a little afraid of that. is cross breeding still possible? or would a wildxplacket be sterile?

can you all give your reasoning for thinking they're both crosses? i want to be able to tell the difference in the future so i can get pure imbellis.

ok, still waiting for an answer, but in the mean time does anyone know what can help induce spawning behavior? the male is doing everything typical of spawning behavior other than building a bubble nest. any idea what is up?

pull up photos of PK (plaket) bettas, you will see what we are talking about.

The imbellis can be cross-bred to form am armadillo type plaket betta. Unfortunately, you eiother have xbred imbellis or poorly bred imbellis.

Unfortunately, they will not breed, no matter what you do if 1) they are from a poor gene pull or 2) she's just not attracted to the male

ok thank you, but he still resembles the imbellis pictured more than the PK male., i'll try to get some better picture of him to show you all. thanks for the help though.

I admit defeat now. After alot of looking i fianlly see what you all were talking about. I believe they are wild betta splendens now. the anal fin color pattern is what finally convinced me. owell, they're still beautiful fish. thanks for the help everyone. my only concern now is whether or not i should remove bella and give her her own tank. what do you all think. her fins are starting to heal but not nearly as fast as jacob's did.
