Anyone else have the same problem? I will constantly move stuff around and bring in new things such as rocks, plants but I can never get the tank looking good enough for me to be pleased with it.

Then I look at some of the tanks on here and the way they have arranged everything is amazing.

Yeah I'm terrible at it, at the moment I only have rocks, sand and plants so not really my fault, should be getting a delivery today (but it's looking unlikely, an hour to deliver left) with a big ol' bit of wood and stuff to finally set up my external filter and get rid of that annoying BioLife :p Bet it'll still look rubbish but it just gives me something to do next week :D

Here is what my tank looks like at the moment (awful I know);

I'm wanting to change the substrate to sand and get a couple of real nice rocks in there to make it look like the bottom of a lake, or perhaps get it to look like some sort of reef aquarium (only it would be freshwater obviously). Perhaps taking out a few (if not all) of the plants currently in there...

You would be amazed at the difference having a solid backing would make. Sellotape a black bin liner to the back and any sides with a wall behind them, to see what I mean.

nope i got no probs like that with my tank it looks
very sexy (would post pics but don't know how)

I'm almost always moving things around in my tanks.

I don't think yours looks as bad as you think it does!! Maybe just try a background of some sort and a few taller plants in the back or on the sides?

Heres a little tip for aquascaping that i was told and to my eye works well.

First divide the tank length ways into five equal sections, then place your main focus point (largest/tallest piece of wood or rock) in the 4th section from the left hand side of the tank. Then selecting pieces by order of size grade them down in either direction from the starting point until you reach the ends of the tank. Try not to lean any pieces against any sides of the tank. Also decore should be placed into the tank first and the substrate after so that the base of each piece is submerged in the substrate.

Don't feel bad. I totally suck at aquascaping.
I go into the photo section here and look at the gorgeous planted tanks people have, then I look at ours and well.... it's just sad :p hehe
Probably just takes some practice to get good at it like anything else. Just have to learn what works with what to make it look great.

I'm quite happy with my tank now. i find having a corner filled with all different plants and a bit of bogwood looks quite good. for my next tank i think im going to go for heavily planted (easy to care for plants though) and lots of bog wood, no other ornaments really.

heres a pic of mine:

next one though i will either be using black sand or small black stones. and maybe having a curtain of bubbles at the back.

its easy to look on here and other web sites and think how nice there tanks look but if u think about it if they look at your tank then they are probely thinking how good your tank looks compaired to theres, its common to disrespect your work and love other its just human. well all your tank need is a background, then decide if your want to rearage it the only thing ide say that you should consider is maby a few more plants.
it looks great as it is tho, (alot beter than mine)
shang hi ^_^

Don't feel bad, I suck at aquascaping too. That's part of the reason I like mbuna (rock-dwelling african cichlids) so much, their natural environment is all rocks. So just chuck some rocks and sand in and their happy as pigs in mud. :hyper:

I have a community tank with a few plants, but I refuse to post pics cause it's so ugly. The fish seem to like it, so that's all that counts.

lol yep, i'm no good at it. in the end i gave up, and bought a Crayfish. dumped the gear it needed in the tank, and left it to it, three weeks later it had the tank how it liked it, and it didnt look too bad. best bit is if someone askes why the tank is like that, you can just blame the cray! lol it turned out not to have a taste for fish too, so ended as a win win!

Yep, I'm the same. Get my tank looking how I like it, then go on the members tanks thread and see other tanks and like them soooo much and try to copy them , (never manage to get it as good though! ) then see someone elses and change it again! Its never ending! At least it gives my fish something different every now and again so they never get bored!!
