The past few months, i've been living on my own, but have yet had the chance to get my fish tank brought down to my place (about an hour away).

The other day, my dad called me and said alot of water had evaporated out of my fish tank, and that he was going to add more and wanted to know what he had to add to the tank. I tried to talk him out of doing anything all together, as I would be home in a few days, but he persisted. I gave in and told him to add 10 drops of dechlor, because i had a hard time getting out of him how much water was gone (40 gal tank). I estimated that 25% of the water was gone by what he was saying.

I came home last night and didn't see all my fish, but didn't worry about it too much as the light was off. This morning he tells me he put in 3 drops! Why it couldn't have waited 24 hours i have no clue. Thankfully the tank was under stocked, as I had just gotten it going when I moved out. There were 6 tiger barbs in it, now there are only 4 that I see. and now he wants to go out and buy more fish to throw in there. grrrrrr

So since its been about 48 hours, should I add dechlorinator up to the needed level?

I would add the declorinator, sorry for your problems tttjfttt, parents who needs them at times.

Did the two missing barbs disappear before or after he added the water?
Overall I think the tank is probably fine, as well as the fish. It was probably a very small amount of chlorines that made it in and they've probably dissipated by now. If you have chloramines, there may still be trace amounts so adding dechlorinator can't hurt.
You've been away for a while and two missing fish really isn't that bad, especially if your father isn't in to keeping fish. At least he's been trying, give the guy a break :flowers:

By the way, you've been missed around here. It's good to see ya!

I virtually never add dechlor to my freshwater tanks, I have never lost a fish because of it. The tank should be fine, but adding dechlor wont hurt.

Chestnut, I really wish you wouldn't say things like that without explaining why you can get away with it. I don't add dechlor either most of the time, but it's because I'm on well water and our supplier adds very few harmful chemicals. Basically, there isn't enough chlorine or chloramine in my tap water to do any harm; I'm assuming it's the same with Chestnut.

Thanks everyone. I haven't been around because I have been extremely busy wiht work. WAYYYYY too many 12 hr + days. By the time its over, i just want to go home and do nothing. But its break time now, so I may make it on, but I know I have alot of family coming in, so we'll see.

I know for a fact that one of the barbs that went missing after the dechlor was not added. The other one I'm not sure. I haven't made it home since thanksgiving (i know, its bad to go a month without water changes, but my tank is WAY under stocked). I remember 6 barbs, my dad claims 5. I have no clue when the other one went missing. I have gone ahead and added some just to be safe, but everyone looks great.

I know for a fact that we don't have chloramine here, which is good. Or I should say we didn't when I last checked the water supply back in August.

Thanks for the replies!
