I'm Not New Here, But I Have A Question

I recently got a 30 gallon aquarium and I read about how you need to cycle the tank. I got mine traded from someone my dad works with, and it's been running for over 3 years. It's got the same filter and heater, but I'm not sure if I have to cycle because it isn't a brand-new aquarium.

when you changed tank did you leave the filter to dry out? did you clean it?
if so, did you clean it out in the tank water, or tap water?


if using tap water the chlorine will kill the good bacteria,
leaving it to try will also.

if you took it staright from set up its ok...if its dryed out start again check heaters not broken as my second hand one was

Was the tank set-up and running with fish until you got it? It only takes about 24 hours for the biological filter to die out if it doesn't have a food source.

It probably only didn't have any living organisms in the tank for a grand total of 2 hours before I put my plants in it, and along came snails, so I think it's good to add fish in, but I'm not sure.

so you went to there house and unset tank yourself and bagged everything so filters still dripping?
then yes you should be ok as long as it was all running with fish in it
